I Step into your nursery and quietly watch you sleep
Your tiny arms above your head, Your breathing slow and deep
Your cupid’s lips set in a pout, begin to gently ripple
You dream your dreams and try to find that imaginary nipple.

As moonbeams dance around your cot then slowly come to rest
I watch you softly sleeping and my heart swells in my chest
I choke on my emotions as I look upon your face
A spirit so inquisitive, a heart so pure and chaste.

I think of what might lie ahead, the joy and all the fun
The learning how to walk and talk, the bruises yet to come
Though there’ll be many tears and fears along your chosen way
I’ll always be beside you to chase those fears away.

We’ll dance amongst the Fairies and sit down with the Elves
We’ll play with all the best of toys that sit upon the shelves
And when your eyes grow heavy and your heart is not so keen
I’ll watch you as you go to sleep, to rest and then to dream.

Your stir, your breathing changes beat, your eyes then open wide
I step back in the shadows, preparing now to hide
But it’s too late, you’ve seen me as you wake from blissful sleep
I remember all the promises I now will have to keep.

I recall all the ungrounded fears when your mother was your age
I tiptoe to your cot, into your soft sweet face I gaze
You crincle up your nose, then frown, then giggle joyfully
Your bright blue eyes reflect your mother smiling up at me.
